In our article today we show you two tutorials to be inspired to create a kind of tent typical of the indigenous peoples of North America, hence its name of "Indian store." Nowadays, the tipi has become an accessory much loved by the children . It can be used for decoration of a room child's or girl's or to decorate your outdoor space. It is perfect for an outdoor playground providing shade or protecting your children from the wind.
It has a conical shape, is usually built of wood and animal skin and is very easy to assemble, disassemble and transport. The tipis are sold by many manufacturers of toys and decorative items for children's rooms. But they are also very easy to do at home. Here are two tutorials that explain how to make a tepee for children and we are also going to give you some decorating suggestions for this type of tent.
We start with the list of materials needed to make an Indian tent at home: 4 wooden bars (you can find bamboo bars very appropriate for this project), sisal rope, a fabric that depends on your choice (the fabric used to this project is 180 x 270 cm), 3 screws, scissors, screwdriver, a drill.
To create your tipi, we must first cut a large piece of rope and seal the ends with the candle lit or with a lighter. Then, using the drill and make a hole in the top of each of the wooden bars. Insert the rope into the hole and tie a knot on the other side.
Next, we must put the four bars side by side and measure if each one has the same height and then create the crossing point so that the position for the future structure of your Indian tent is more stable. Once this process is completed, make a second hole in another wooden bar. Insert the thread into the hole and then wrap it two or three times around the bars to give more stability to your structure.
As you can see in the photo, the next step is to join the bars with strong rope (we can use more bars depending on the size of our tipi) by mounting a tripod and tie up to complete the structure.
After the time has come to place the fabric we can fix it with strong glue or as shown in the picture with screws.
We can measure the fabric before or after having created the structure of our Indian store in this tutorial they have done it afterwards.
In the end we have a beautiful decoration and a place where our children can hide, play, read a book, etc.
In the next tutorial we will see how to cut the fabric and build a smaller size Indian tent perfect for a child so if you follow these instructions to create something with approximately the same dimensions and design as what you have in the photos. If you want to make a larger tepee, buy longer needles and calculate your own measurements for the fabric. This tutorial requires sewing, but it is simply to make several straight lines with a regular sewing machine which you can also do by hand but you will lose more time. If you do not like or can not sew, we recommend reviewing the first tutorial in which the fabric is wrapped around the frame.
To make this tent you need 4 wooden bars since it is simpler to work with them and save from the budget, but it can also be done with 5 or more. If you want to use more, you will also have to calculate your own measurements for the fabric. The materials you need are 4 light wooden poles the measures of the cloths depends on you, you can buy very long sticks and then cut them the diameter also decides you can be 3.4 or more centimeters. The fabric will also depend on your taste our advice is to buy at least 4 meters of cloth and 1 or 2 meters of decorative fabric for the doors of the tipi.
For a tipi like this, cut three triangles from the fabric, a smaller triangle for the front panel and two large rectangles and two small ones from the fabric you would use to decorate. The cut is one of the most difficult parts of the construction due to the size of the pieces, so do it in a large space or remove all the things from the floor in the room to do it. Use a tape measure, a hard edge ruler and a pencil to measure the pieces and make sure they have straight lines.
Once the pieces are cut, it's time to start with on the front panel or the doors of the tipi.
With the help of the griddle and special glue we stick the decorative fabric to the large pieces that we will use at the entrance of the tent. You can also fold the fabric to embellish the inner edges if you wish.
In the next photo we can see how to make the front part of the tipi placing the smallest triangle on a table and on its lower edge placing the decorative fabric.
Do not forget to adjust the fabric so that the decorative curtains overlap and match, then you can bake or glue them with special glue.
We fold each of the two rectangular pieces in half horizontal stitches or paste the short side and the long side. We can bake a small piece of velcro to help us open and close the curtains at the entrance of our tipi.
You can embellish the upper half of the front with an appliqué if you wish. In the photo you can see that a circle has been cut out of the decorative fabric and a sweet pink heart has been sewn by hand to the center. You can cook whatever you want. What remains to be done is simply to sew all the triangular panels together to make the tent in the form of a pyramid. Each seam will be a part that will be placed on the poles. We must sew each panel on the sides of the triangles, aligning the upper parts and fixing the backgrounds. You will have 4 sewn panels and four seams.
Now, all you have to do is insert the sticks and tie them. Insert each stick, through each of the four covers. Once they are all inserted, tie them with rope and you have your tipi.
